Our Fellow Mortals

Our Fellow Mortals is the Artist name for SF Bay Area based Artist Jonathan Hemelberg. 

I was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. My artwork is inspired by the intersection of queer, cultural, and ethnic identities. Growing up as a queer first-gen Salvadoran-Colombian-American often left me feeling invisible in a vast majority of spaces, even queer ones at the time. As a result, I focus on painting and drawing figures that celebrate sex, queerness, browness, and indigenous history as a way to make others, like me, feel powerful in their own skin. My most recent works draw inspiration from Salvadoran folk art as a way to enter and explore my Central and South American history which is also often underrepresented. I paint on digital media as well as wood, and Papel Amate.
